Preparing for a Natural Childbirth, Part 2 - Books I Have Read

In preparing for the best births possible I have read several books, most of them rented from the library.
Here's a list and a small review of what I found helpful from each book:

The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth by Henci Goer and Rhonda Wheeler
This is by far the best book I have read. A little clinical and boring at times but full of very helpful information. A must read and a real eye opener.

Birthing from Within: An Extra-Ordinary Guide to Childbirth Preparation by CNM, MA, Pam England and PhD, Rob Horowitz
This book definitely has a very new agey slant to it but there are some very helpful thoughts to be gained from reading it. For me, I really enjoyed the chapters on birth art and working through your fears and negative experiences in giving birth.

Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way: Revised Edition by Susan McCutcheon-Rosegg, Erick Ingraham, and Robert A. Bradley
Jeremiah and I read this book together when we were preparing for our first child's birth. Practicing the relaxation techniques was enjoyable and I gained some helpful information. I suppose if you had a long and drawn out labor, the Bradley method could be invaluable. Because my labor was so short and quick, we didn't do a single thing we had practiced.

Supernatural Childbirth by Jackie Mize. This was a gift from my mom and I honestly only briefly read through it. I found the scriptures helpful to meditate on but the basic premise of the possibility of having a pain-free childbirth a little on the flaky side of spirituality. I believe birth is supernatural but I also believe that pain is a part of the process.

Ina May's Guide to Childbirth by Ina May Gaskin is also a great book with lots of information about the process of labor and birth. It also has some really good birth stories in it. There are a few parts that are kind of hippy-ish, but overall I think it is definitely worth reading.

I have read Ina May's Guide too and really enjoyed it. I just got to tired the other day to finish my book list.

Came across your blog via Google...looking up the author Supernatural Pregnancy. :)

And I just have to say...I've had three painfree (and drug free) deliveries and am in the process of praying for my next one...hopefully birthed any day now. *grin*

While it may seem flaky b/c it's not what the norm is, I assure you it's not. Promise. :)

God is so much bigger than what we give him credit for. And the cross DID do what it said it did. Only sometimes our mind battles and personal experience keep us at arm's length from receiving the fullness of it.

When God challenged me to believe Him for a painfree delivery (before I even heard of the book), I was speechless. But...his ways aren't ours, you know?

I understand it's a weird concept. But isn't that what God does? breaks us out of our box and introduces us to His Ways?

anyway. :) Just wanted to say that b/c I truly have experienced spiritually painfree deliveries.

blessings to you as you bring another little one into the world!
